I am manging a mailing list on majordomo that is primarily used to send
out a newsletter. When people sign up they immediately receive at
"majordomo results" mail - often with a long technical page they have no
clue about what to do with - it is confusing to them. Is there a way to
avoid that these "majordomo results" mails are send out to new
subscribers after they have signed up?

I had the very same problem.
I used Dan Liston's "s u b s c r i b e" script, so that users would only have to write to listname-***@myserver with whatever contents they liked, instead of having to write to majordomo with a line containing "zubscribe listname".
This greatly simplified processing, but they received these "majordomo results" which didn't mean a thing to them, because they didn't even know they had issued a Majordomo command :-)

So I patched both majordomo and the zubscribe script, so that under most circumstances these results aren't sent to the user. They only get sent if the user issues many commands and/or if there is an error message.

If you're interested I'll wrap up the patch and post it here.

Please send your patch to the list, and perhap to Joes site, along with
a note of what it does. Even if the "regulars" here may not have the
same needs as your site, there are many who only google that will have
use for your patch, and be able to find it.
